Presidential Search

The Board of Trustees invites applications and nominations for the position of President of College of The Albemarle (COA). The President serves as the Chief Executive Officer and reports directly to the appointed 20-member Board.


About the College:

College of The Albemarle is a comprehensive community college with an excellent academic reputation dedicated to providing accessible education, training, and retraining for better jobs and better lives in Northeastern North Carolina.  At COA, the overall objective of the College is to serve the community.  This objective is met one student at a time, by offering exceptional programs and services.  COA serves seven counties Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans to address the area’s economic needs, and continuously seek ways to enhance our economic development partnerships with local governments, businesses, and industries.  The overall objective is community-based  but our priorities are student-based. Enabling students to succeed in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to enter the labor force, advance in a current job, obtain a better job, transfer to a four-year institution, or enrich his/her life experiences is COA’s  priority.  In 2002, College of The Albemarle celebrated forty years of academic service to the Albemarle region. As it has from its beginnings as the first comprehensive community college in North Carolina, COA continues to expand its programs and services to the seven county Albemarle Area.

Presidential Profile


Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited college or university required; earned Doctorate preferred;

Minimum of 3 years of senior level community college leadership experience or equivalent.

  • A record of ethical administration, high personal integrity, high personal standards and a record of fair and honest leadership.
  • Communicates effectively, possesses an open communication style with strong speaking, writing, and listening skills and a demonstrated ability to develop a high level of trust with superiors, peers, subordinates and the greater community.
  • An innovative and creative leader with a passion for and an understanding of the community college mission who is committed to academic excellence, student success, high quality accessible programs, and services to students.
  • A visible leader within the college and the communities who possesses strong interpersonal skills and has demonstrated the ability to work well with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • A demonstrated record of visionary and effective leadership that includes balanced support for programs and services across the college.     
  • An inclusive leader with a proven commitment to using the talents and skills of the faculty, staff, and other stakeholders in the decision-making processes.
  • A leader who has demonstrated ability to reach out to various and diverse stakeholders to build consensus and gain support.
  • Skills and abilities to work with multiple elected and appointed Boards across a large service area.
  • An understanding of the importance of and commitment to technology and data as it relates to institutional effectiveness including its application to teaching and learning, and administrative support.   
  • A demonstrated ability to build and implement effective plans that include actively supporting the development of partnerships between the college and other entities throughout the service area.
  • An understanding and commitment to establishing an effective relationship and strong accountability to the Board of Trustees.
  • A record of decisiveness and good judgment that leads to effective and efficient advancement of the organization.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in leading and managing personnel and financial resources in fulfilling the mission of an organization including the ability to obtain additional funding for the college through alternative means.
  • An articulate spokesperson for the college locally, statewide, and nationally, as well as being politically astute with proven advocacy skills and a solid understanding of local, state, and national legislative processes and issues.
